In this paper, I was asked to write about how evolution has affected our society. First, before I start talking about that, I am going to give a brief history of where evolution came from, and about the man who devised it. It all started with a man named Charles Darwin. He was born in Shrewsbury, England on February 12, 1809, the same day and date that Abraham Lincoln was born. He trained to be a doctor when he was old enough, but was nauseated at the sight of a surgery without anesthetic. He then transferred colleges and studied theology. Darwin was a deeply committed man in the Christian faith. He read his Bible regularly and also took it literally. Theology came natural to him.
Soon though, he gained a great interest in geology. Darwin studied more and more about animals and where they came from. Although he was a religious man, he fell away into unbelief when he all of a sudden came up with the theory that animals changed over millions of years. He went to a southern part of Africa to study different species on a ship named the HMS BEAGLE. This is where he was inspired to write this theory down. He also published a book (to his wife’s great despair) called the ORIGIN OF SPECIES. This is the abbreviated name of it and that’s what I will call it.
After publishing it, the book became a national bestseller to which it was bought up by scientists and laymen alike. But soon this book and its teachings started to become scientific theory and God was left out of the question of creation. This had a huge impact on the world as a hole in the sense that people wanted to become their own gods and believe things that they can understand and that they are in control of.
Today evolution has had the greater impact on our society. It is in our schools, our textbooks, and our beliefs. The problem with evolution is that it is a theory: it has and cannot be proven. But men in their sinful state choose to believe that we came here by chance. We need to believe science that is based on the Holy Word of God.
